how long does it take for spironolactone to work for hair loss
All beauty, all the time for everyone. Dermatologists are prescribing this acne medication to treat hair lossStocksy , loss of female pattern hair (abbreviated to FPHL) - which may vary from thinning to bald points, or even becoming alopecia- affects approximately 40% of women by age 50. Unlike men who often see hair loss starting in temples and forming a form of "M", defines androgenetic alopecia as "stage thinning on the line of the part, followed by the loss of diffuse hair that radiates from the top of the head." Although it may happen, women rarely experience receding and/or go completely bald if diagnosed with this condition. Initially developed as a diuretic for high blood pressure (and more recently taqueo acne), oral medication, spironolactone, has been proven to help with hair growth. Hair loss, at its root, may have many potential origins including genetics, medical conditions and physical/emotional stress. Then, dermatologists certified by the Flora Kim, MD, FAAD of Highland Park, Texas; Purvisha Patel, MD, MOHS and cosmetic surgeon of Memphis, Tennessee and Olive Branch, Mississippi; and Annie Gonzalez, MD, from Miami, explain exactly what you need to know about taking spironolactone for hair loss purposes. Editor's Note: If you notice any unusual hair change, we encourage you to talk to your primary care doctor or dermatologist to determine the right treatment plan for you. Spironolactone Type of ingredient: Potassium-SparingMain Benefits: Originally created for high blood pressure, derms have recently begun by prescribing spironolactone for acne to block DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which is one of the main causes of androgenetic alopecia as well. Who should use it: Because the action mechanism is specifically for hair loss related to hormone, spironolactone will not work on those who experience hair loss due to non-hormonal causes, such as stress or chemotherapy. How long to see the results? To address the loss of female pattern hair, derms traditionally recommend 100-200 mg daily, for a minimum of 6 months to determine if this is the right treatment option. Do not use: Anything that can further increase your potassium levels. Kim quotes that contraindicated drugs with spironolactone include amyloride, drospirenona, eplerenone, triamterene, cyclosporine, lofexidine, bosutinib and pomalidomide to name some medications. What is Spironolactone? According to González, by definition, spironolactone is a diuretic that separates potassium that blocks the effects of aldosterone and testosterone hormones and has some effects similar to estrogen. "Truly, your spine is a basic steroid core with four rings. The primary metabolite of spironolactone is canrenone, which is an active metabolite that is also an antagonist of aldosterone, and therefore promotes diuresis," he explains. You might be asking what on earth all that means – and what it means for hair loss. To begin with, we must address what causes the hormonal loss of hair in people (specifically those with ovaries), which is a difficult question to answer. In simple terms, estrogen increases the amount of time that the hair passes in the growth phase, so when the estrogen decreases, the hair loses these protective effects. "Strogen is synthesized in ovarian tissues and other peripheral tissues and then travels to their receptors, some of which are found in scalp hair follicles," Kim explains. "In the scalp follicle, it has been reported that estradiol induces aromatase activity. Estrogen has been hypothesized to have a protective role against hair loss based on the observation that patients with lower estrogen levels during menopause, postpartum or treatment with aromatase inhibitors or selective estrogen receptor modulators are more likely to develop hair loss. " So, in theory, if DHT is one of the main reasons for androgenetic alopecia, then spironolactone makes sense to try. Essentially, spironolactone helps reduce the effects of DHT, helping to prevent the minimization of capillary follicles. Who can use it? "As we age, we lose estrogen over time," Patel explains. "When there is a genetic predisposition, the loss of female pattern hair may occur. Testosterone in the body and in the capillary follicles are rampant, and this can lead to the minimization of capillary follicles and hair loss. Spironolactone helps to oppose testosterone in hair follicles and decreases hair loss. " Gonzalez adds: "If your body produces a greater amount of testosterone or other androgens, spironolactone can totally help reduce hair thinning by blocking the effects of testosterone on the body. The principle behind this is that there would be less stimulation induced by testosterone in the hair follicles, and therefore more hair retention. " How should it be used? Currently, spironolactone is given by prescription and is taken orally and/or is composed in topical formulations for hair loss with less side effects. Derms traditionally recommend 100-200mg daily, a minimum of six months to determine if this is the right treatment option. Patel emphasizes that this treatment method is in no way a night solution. "[Patients complain] that is not working, but this is mainly due to expectation. It stops hair from falling more and growth can take time," she explains. "The dose can also be adjusted by the dermatologist certified by your board. " What about side effects? Remember, spironolactone is a diuretic, so it is imperative that you make the extra effort to drink a lot of water. Patel points out that "I could get your electrolytes out of the dock leading to high potassium levels. That's why your doctor checks this level during treatment. " Taking spironolactone, Patel also recommends that patients lower their potassium intake (through supplements or banana consumption) in addition to avoiding colestoximin, digoxin, lithium, trimethoprim; heart or blood pressure medications (especially another diuretic); medicine to prevent blood clots; or NSAIDs (noxypropyroidal) According to Kim, other potential side effects include "the dizziness with postureal hypotension, breast sensitivity, decreased libido, stained and electrolytic imbalance. This androgen receptor blocker is classified as a D pregnancy category." Gonzalez emphasizes that due to its effects similar to estrogens, this medication is only given to those who are not pregnant. "The most common side effects are diuresis, menstrual irregularities, gastrointestinal alteration and breast tenderness. To add, women of breeding potential should be in a reliable form of birth control with spironolactone to avoid exposure during pregnancy. " Final thoughts Before exploring this option, talk to your primary health care provider or dermatologist to determine whether this is the right treatment method for your current lifestyle. Other options, such as minoxidil (at least 5% or more by Kim), flutamide, dutasteride, finasteride, birth control (those that combine and contain both estrogen and progestin) can be a better solution. Ultimately, hormonal balance is exactly that: a balance. "Shopping one way or the other with hormonal levels does not help everyone," Patel warns.
